London is a dream for museum lovers, packed with world-class collections and stunning architecture.

But if you’re short on time, which museums and galleries should you prioritise?

As a museum professional and Londoner of 10+ years, this is the 1-day museum hopping route I recommend. London has many incredible museums and galleries, but these are absolute must-sees in my opinion.

With this itinerary, you’ll spend around 1.5 hours at each place, hitting the highlights without rushing, and making sure there’s time for lunch!

natural history museum

🕘 9:00 AM – Natural History Museum

Start your day among dinosaurs, gemstones, and the iconic Hintze Hall.
Must-see: Hope the blue whale, dinosaur gallery, Earth Hall.
Pro tip: Book a time slot ticket (it’s free) to guarantee entry.

historical clothing at the v&a

🕥 10:30 AM – Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A)

Just a two-minute walk next door. Explore fashion, sculpture, and design treasures.
Must-see: Cast Courts, Jewellery Gallery, Fashion collection.
Pro tip: Grab a coffee or pastry at the beautiful courtyard café.

🍽️ 12:00 PM – Lunch in South Kensington

Head to the stunning courtyard café or pop over to Exhibition Road or South Kensington for plenty of food options.

Nereid Monument at the British Museum

🕐 1:30 PM – British Museum

Take the Piccadilly Line from South Kensington to Holborn, then walk to the museum (approx 40 minutes total travel time).

national portrait gallery london

🕓 4:30 PM – National Portrait Gallery

Right next door! A beautifully updated space showcasing portraits from Tudor kings to contemporary icons.
Must-see: Elizabeth I, Shakespeare, David Bowie.
Pro tip: The National Portrait Gallery closes at 6pm daily, but if you’re visiting on a Friday or Saturday, it remains open until 9pm, so you won’t need to rush!

✨ Optional Evening Bonus

Make sure to check for any museum lates if you don’t have evening plans. The National Gallery, Portrait Gallery, British Museum and V&A are all open late on certain days, often with special events. Check my museum lates guide to find out more.

Final Tips:

✅ Travel light: museums have bag checks.
✅ Book tickets on official museum websites. Third-parties often have a clunky process for redeeming tickets, and with a 1-day trip we want to be efficient.
✅ Download museum maps or highlight trails in advance.
✅ Stay hydrated and wear comfy shoes!

With this itinerary, you’ll experience some of London’s most iconic museums at a relaxed, enjoyable pace, from ancient wonders to cutting-edge portraits.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local looking for a cultural refresh, this day of museum hopping will inspire you. Happy exploring!
